Programme (Example)
The seminar consists of a half-day programme comprising the following modules:*
MODULE 1
EU Information and Communication Policy (15-20 minutes)

  • Introduction: Finding information about the EU on-line and offline
  • A short overview of the EU information and communication policy
  • Definition of EU information sources and of a coherent search strategy
    • 'Europa' server, Information Centres
    • Specific EU databases and non-EU websites
MODULE 2
EU Fact Finding Theory and Practice: News and Legal Documents (1.5 hours)

  • Presentation of optimal information sources: assets and shortcomings (Rapid, Bulletin of the EU, agenda of institutions, Eur-Lex, PreLex, legislative observatory, registers of documents of Council, Commission, Parliament and comitology)
  • Search practices (by subgroups of maximum 3 to 4 participants)
  • Individual/group problems resolution
  • Definition of thematic searches
COFFEE BREAK (10-15 minutes)
MODULE 3
EU Fact Finding Theory and Practice: General Information, History and Policies, Who's Who, Dialogue with Citizens, Statistics, Relays Centres (1.5 hours)

  • Presentation of information sources: assets and shortcomings (ABC on Europe, historical and political archives, Eurostat, Eurobarometer, institutional organigrammes and directories, Information Centres)
  • Search practices (by subgroups of maximum 3 to 4 participants)
  • Individual/group problems resolution
  • Definition of thematic searches
MODULE 4
E-Fact Finding outside the 'Europa' Server (30 minutes)
MODULE 5
Summary and Feedback Session (5-10 minutes)

At the end of the seminar, the participants will be able to use the 'Europa' server, and a number of EU and non-EU websites and databases, to quickly and effectively find:
  • Working documents
  • Press releases
  • Legal documents
  • Political positions of the different EU institutions
  • Policy papers
  • Information about EU policies, history and activities in general
  • EU Information Centres
  • Information about calls for tenders
  • 'Who's who' and 'who's doing what' in the EU
  • Statistical data
  • Multimedia information
  • Critical papers and researches
  • A number of fact finding efficiency tricks
