On 21 March 2019, the Baillet Latour Chair of European Union - China Relations and the EU-China Research Centre, co-organised with China in Focus Group, a round-table discussion on the key issues of EU-China relations at the Chinese library at the Verversdijk campus. Participation was reserved to the students of the College of Europe in order for them to fully interact with the distinguished guests from the delegation of China Public Diplomacy Association, including Mr XU Jian, former Ambassador of China to Slovenia, Romania and Poland; Mr ZHANG Yansheng, Chief Research Fellow at China Centre for International Economic Exchanges; Prof. WANG Yiwei, Director of Centre for European Studies at Renmin University of China; and Mr FU Jing, Director of China Watch (think tank under China Daily).

Fifteen questions were raised and discussed between the students and the Chinese experts in two hours including issues on China’s human rights, ideology, economic development, its new law on foreign investment, its climate policy, and its Arctic strategy. On EU-China relations, a wide range of issues were covered from the ongoing negotiations on bilateral investment agreement, bilateral cooperation on the reform of WTO, on climate change and on African development, to the potential geopolitical conflicts between the two sides, and how to understand the most recently published policy paper by the EU which addresses China for the first time as ‘systemic rival’. After the event, students gained better understanding of Chinese perspectives on relations with the EU and international affairs.
