On Thursday, 11 March 2021, the Department of European Political and Governance Studies hosted its annual Conference on Gender Equality entitled “Women in Health: it’s time to care!.

The COVID-19 pandemic certainly highlights many questions related to the way health systems are managed across the European Union. One of them is undeniably the underestimation of healthcare professions. It has been an issue for decades and it affects more specifically women since they occupy most of these positions. This is why we decided to dedicate our annual gender conference to this matter.

To reflect upon this topic, the conference gathered a range of experts coming from the institutions, civil society and from academia. After an introductory speech by Rector Federica MOGHERINI, the conference started with a keynote address by MEP Prof Lina GÁLVEZ MUÑOZ (S&D). It was followed by a panel debate including interventions from MEP Prof Lina GÁLVEZ MUÑOZ(S&D), Dr Eugenia CARACCIOLO DI TORELLA (University of Leicester) and Prof Dr Paul DE RAEVE, Secretary General of the European Federation of Nurses Associations representing 3 million nurses from all EU Member States. Professor Agnès HUBERT moderated the session and concluding remarks were provided by Professor Olivier COSTA, Director of Studies of the European Political and Governance Studies Department.

Following last year’s conference exploring the role of men in supporting gender equality, this second conference aimed at continuing a series of annual conferences organised at the College of Europe to discuss gender equality and the challenges faced at the EU level on this matter.
