EU-funded project El-Hiwar II — First Summer School on Euro-Arab Relations

The first Summer School on Euro-Arab Relations, organized by the College of Europe Development Office in the context of the EU-funded project El-Hiwar II, took place from 15 to 19 July 2019 in Bruges and Brussels.

A total of 24 participants coming from both European and Arab countries and with varied backgrounds—journalists, economists, researchers, and public officials—benefited from the course. Motivated by the aim of further and better dialogue between the Euro-Arab political and social actors, participants contributed to the course with their reflections, ideas for improvement and project proposals.

The one-week training programme focussed, among other topics, on the present and past of Euro-Arab relations, the Arab World in the EU’s foreign policy, human rights, sustainable development, intercultural relations, project design and advocacy skills.

The programme also included a visit to the European Commission and to the European Parliament on 18 July 2019 where both the functioning of the institutions and key topics on Euro-Arab relations such as the war in Syria, the Gender Action Plan II and the external policies of the European Union were discussed.

The full programme of the course can be found on the Summer School website. Testimonials from the participants and a selection of papers prepared by them will be available on the website soon—stay tuned!
