On Monday 23 February 2015, Director General Thomas WESTPHAL, in charge of European Policy at the German Ministry of Finance, gave a lecture on 'The Eurocrisis: new challenges for the EU’s economic policy'.

The recent events in Greece, economic stalemate in some Eurozone countries and a record high debt-to-GDP ratio are signs that the euro crisis is not yet over and that the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) needs further deepening.

Director General WESTPHAL delivered a guest lecture on the subject of the European economic policy necessary to reinforce the stability of the Monetary Union and to allow growth and convergence. Mr WESTPHAL highlighted the German viewpoints on the steps required to further complete the EMU. He addressed questions such as the need for more integration and improved governance including treaty changes, the importance of structural reforms, the need to use the EU-budget to finance European public goods and the relation between the non-Euro countries and the Eurozone which continues its integration.
