The newly appointed Chairholder of the European Energy Policy Chair of the College of Europe, Professor Dirk BUSCHLE, organised a conference entitled "The UK Unplugged: Brexit and the Internal Energy Market" on 30 September 2016 at the College of Europe, Bruges campus.

The results of the British referendum of 23 June 2016 shook the European Union in its foundations, and with it also the Energy Union, the EU’s ambitious project to take the internal energy market to the next level. While that project will lose one of its staunchest supporters, the United Kingdom will have to come to terms with the fact that access to the internal energy market is crucial for an island depending on imports, infrastructure and trade.

This conference looked into two aspects of the post-Brexit situation: first, an “institutional” panel discussed the main options for the United Kingdom to maintain access to the internal energy market—options that were all discussed during the campaign and are still on the table today. Secondly, we invited investors and operators from the UK to complement that discussion by telling us which of those options really make sense for their genuine challenges and problems.
