The “Krupp Chair”, the first of its kind at the College of Europe and funded by the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation in Essen, Germany, was established in 1996. Professor Dieter Mahncke became the first chairholder upon his appointment to the position of Director of the Department of Political and Administrative Studies. In 2006 Professor Mahncke also became the Director of the new Department of EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies. Since the Chair was created to meet the growing demand for the study of EU external relations, it was logical that from 2008 onwards it was affiliated to the Department of EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies. Funded by the Krupp Foundation, foreseen for ten years, the Chair was taken over by the College in 2007, Professor Mahncke remaining the chairholder ad personam.
The Chair has a three-fold function: to ensure the overall direction of the Department, to augment the course offerings on foreign policy and security studies and to develop research activities within the department. One objective with regard to the latter was to make better use of the capabilities present at the College in terms of professors, assistants and students. Thus, a number of research projects in recent years have led to publications on the EU’s involvement in Kosovo, transatlantic relations, international terrorism and EU Neighbourhood Policy.
In the framework of the Alfried Krupp Chair, Professor Mahncke regularly participates in international conferences and advisory boards.
