Hilde Hardeman

Hilde Hardeman (BE) is Head of Unit for Russia and the Northern Dimension Policy at the European Commission’s Directorate-General External Relations in Brussels.

She has dealt with the Eastern neighbours of the European Union since joining the European Commission in 1994. From 2005 to 2008 Professor Hardeman was Head of Unit for Relations with Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus at the Directorate-General External Relations. Between 2000 and 2003 she coordinated the preparation of the Commission’s Regular Reports on the candidate countries at the Directorate-General Enlargement.

Professor Hardeman was awarded a Ph.D. in Slavic philology and history by the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (1992), after studies at Leuven, Stanford University and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris. She taught the history of the Soviet Union and of Eastern Europe at Vesalius College, Vrije Universiteit Brussels, and conducted extensive research on the rights of national minorities in Eastern Europe. She is the author of books and articles on the history of the Russian “white” emigration at the time of the Russian civil war and on minority right issues.
