Ivo Van Bael

Ivo Van Bael, one of the founding fathers of Van Bael & Bellis in Brussels, was born in Antwerp on February 15, 1939. He obtained his Law degree at the University of Louvain in 1961 and also studied at the University of Bologna Law School, at the Bologna Center of the Johns Hopkins University, and at the University of Michigan Law School, where he received the degree of Master in Comparative Law. He started practicing Law with a Wall Street firm in New York in 1963, and subsequently joined their offices in Paris and Brussels. Ivo Van Bael has represented clients in a number of landmark cases in both the Competition and Trade Law field. The competition cases include United Brands, Michelin, IBM, Woodpulp, AKZO, Cartonboard, Boeing/McDonnell Douglas, ITT Promedia, Enso/Stora and Benetton. Ivo Van Bael has been active in both the American Bar Association (ABA) and the International Bar Association (IBA). From 1987 and 1989 he was the Chairman of the Antitrust and Trade Law Committee of the IBA's Section on Business Law. He has lectured at the University of Tokyo and is currently teaching at the College of Europe in Bruges and at the University of Amsterdam. He has also written several books and numerous articles in the field of Competition and Trade Law.
