
Jan Melissen (NL) is Director of the Clingendael Diplomatic Studies Programme at the Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’ in The Hague and Professor of Diplomacy at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. He is currently also Head of Clingendael Asia Studies, Project Director at the Flemish Centre for International Policy and visiting professor at Leiden University.
He graduated in political science and international relations from the University of Amsterdam and holds a Ph.D. from the Faculty of Law at Groningen University. Before joining Clingendael in 2001, he was Director of the Centre for the Study of Diplomacy at the University of Leicester as well as Lecturer in Politics at the same university.
Jan Melissen is co-editor of The Hague Journal of Diplomacy and series editor of the ‘Diplomatic Studies’ book series with Brill Academic Publishers. His latest book is The New Public Diplomacy: Soft Power in International Relations (Palgrave hard cover 2005, paperback 2007). His main fields of interest are the theory and practice of diplomacy, with current research projects on public diplomacy, consular affairs and sub-state diplomacy.
