Fabian AMTENBRINK

Professor of European Union Law, Department of European Law, Erasmus School of Law, Erasmus University Rotterdam

Fabian Amtenbrink holds the chair of European Union law at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. Previously he worked first as a lecturer and, thereafter, as a senior lecturer at the University of Groningen.

He was born and raised in Berlin (West), Germany. After graduating from the Faculty of Law of the Freie Universität Berlin, he obtained a doctorate in law with distinction from the University of Groningen in 1998. Moreover, he is a fully qualified lawyer in Germany (Assessor).

A commercial edition of his thesis on the democratic accountability of the European Central Bank (The Democratic Accountability of Central Banks – A Comparative Study of the European Central Bank) has been published by Hart Publishing Oxford. Moreover, he is co-author of a major Dutch language handbook on the law of the European Union (Recht van de Europese Unie), published by Boom uitgevers Den Haag, and has published articles and case-notes in English, German and Dutch legal and economic journals on institutional and substantive issues of European Union law and central banking.

He has been a visiting professor at the University of Western Ontario (January Term Professor) and at the Fudan University Shanghai (Visting Professor of European law). Moreover, he has and still is teaching general introductions to European Union law, as well as specialized courses such as on internal market law, judicial protection in the European Union and European Economic and Monetary Union, both at undergraduate and graduate level. He has been invited on numerous occasions to present papers and guest lectures, among others at the University of Oxford, the Waseda University Tokyo, the University of Bonn, the Université catholique de Louvain, the Università Carlo Cattaneo and the Università Bocconi.
