Ron S. Ton (NL) is Director of the Clingendael Academy, which is part of the Netherlands Institute of International Relations ‘Clingendael’ in The Hague. His main fields of expertise are international relations, diplomacy, international negotiations as well as scenario and strategic policy planning in foreign policy.

As Director of the Clingendael Academy he has the overall responsibility for the Netherlands and foreign international training and educational programmes, consultancy activities and capacity building projects. Ron Ton manages the Netherlands and foreign international diplomatic training programmes (the training of around 500 foreign diplomats yearly from the NL, Europe, The Arab World, Asia, Latin America and Africa) and capacity building projects for the development of foreign diplomatic academies. He also manages the programmes for European integration, Security and Conflict management and International Skills, like International Negotiations and lobby and Networking.

He has extensive experience in working with governments, NGOs, the private sector and universities worldwide. He is an expert in curricula development, ‘train the trainer’ programmes and the development of interactive education. He acts as an international consultant and advisor in institutional development and capacity building for the professional development of foreign services.

He delivers training in international negotiations and strategic policy development to groups in The Netherlands and in various countries all over the world, in particular to graduates, practitioners and international working officials and diplomats. Ron Ton has designed many simulation games and role plays, for example in the context of the European Union and the United Nations.

Before joining the Clingendael Institute, Ron Ton worked as manager in education and lecturer in International Relations at the InterCollege Business Schools in The Hague. He is a graduate of Utrecht University in Contemporary History. He also obtained his teaching qualifications at the Pedagogical and Didactical Institute in Utrecht. Ron Ton inter alia holds positions as visiting lecturer at the Bulgarian Diplomatic Institute in Sofia, the Centre for Education and Training in Jakarta, the University of Pretoria and various Diplomatic Academy's in the world.

In 2012 he was awarded with the Golden Laurel Bough, the highest distinction of the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He is a member of the European Diplomatic Programme (EDP) and the International Forum on Diplomatic Training (IFDT). Also, he is former President of the Board of Terre des Hommes, a Dutch children’s aid organisation, active in 15 countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
