ESPADA João Carlos - Liberalism (TBCh)

This course aims at providing an introductory overview of some of the main debates in 20th century political thought, especially in what concerns especially in what concerns the contrast between liberal and illiberal views on the role of state and society. It covers four main subjects, which will be discussed on the basis of the arguments produced by major authors associated with those subjects:

(1) The total state vs. liberal democracy (K. Marx/V. I. Lenin and Carl Schmitt);
(2) Liberal democracy vs. the total state (K. Popper and I. Berlin);
(3) Civil association and grown order vs. enterprise association and made order (J. M. Keynes, F. A. Hayek and M. J. Oakeshott);
(4) Theories of Justice in free societies (J. Rawls, Robert Nozick and Thomas Piketty).

The course will be based on the discussion of original texts by the authors under analysis, and open debate on these texts will be encouraged. // ECTS Card
