LANNON Erwan & MARESCEAU Marc - The Legal Dimension of EU External Relations (20h)

This course aims at developing a critical understanding of the external relations of the European Union from a legal perspective.

The first part of the course, taught by Professor Erwan Lannon, concentrates on the legal dimension of EU’s external relations through an analysis of the evolution of the competences, legal basis and instruments (mainly agreements) used by the EU to structure its relations with its main partners around the world and in its neighbourhood.

The second part of the course, taught by Professor Marc Maresceau, gives, from a legal perspective a comparative overview of the relationships between the enlarged EU and the EU’s “old neighbours”, not included in the ENP, through a number of short case-studies. Among others: Russia, Turkey, Switzerland and the European Economic Area (EEA). This part of the course will conclude with reflections on the future legal framework of the relationship EU-UK.

The course combines lectures and discussions with students.//ECTS Card
