BARTUŠKA Václav - European Energy Diplomacy (8h)

Lectures with discussions, aimed to show three major challenges European energy diplomacy faces:

1. For most part, EU is now alone in its climate-change effort. In vanguard, yet alone. Especially parting ways with the US (because they became energy independent once again) is a major challenge for Europe.

2. Many of the EU’s neighbors rely heavily on income from export of oil/gas. Our stated policy is to get rid of oil and gas by mid-century. What are possible reactions from the likes of Algeria, Iraq, and Russia? There is now, thanks to Covid-19, a sort of “preview” of what might be coming: due to lowered energy consumption in the world the oil and gas prices crashed in spring (negative price for oil, -40 dollars per barrel, on April 20, 2020 – first time ever) and we see severe financial troubles in many oil and gas producers.

3. The one we almost never mention: Europe is an awfully rich continent. On a planet where 1.7 billion people do not have enough to eat is our big worry obesity and diabetes. We flush toilets with drinking water – try to say this sentence in India. All our policies, no matter how well intentioned, will be seen differently by non-Europeans. Get used to it. // ECTS Card
