PAPAIOANNOU A. - NATO’s Future and NATO-EU Relations : Building Bridges across Brussels (8h)

Professor Alexandros PAPAIOANNOU

The workshop aims at giving a practitioner’s perspective on some of the challenges European and Euro-Atlantic security is facing with an initial, but not exclusive, focus on security and defence, especially in light of the dramatic developments in Europe over the past few months. The objective is to provide a better understanding of "where we are now, how we arrived here and where we are [possibly] going".

The first part of the workshop will focus on the evolution and the future perspectives of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), within the context of the wider efforts to build European Security. We will look at the creation and evolution of NATO through a historic perspective from its inception to the present. Particular focus is given in the formative years and the present/future of the North Atlantic Alliance, in order to address today's and tomorrow's security challenges.

The second part of the workshop will address the evolution of the relations between the EU and NATO through a political and institutional perspective, drawing from personal experience. Furthermore, it will address the evolution of European Security and Defence and how this is affecting the transatlantic relationship.
