Many westerners have a preconception that China, through its economic reforms, will see the emergence of capitalism in a similar way in which it transpired in Europe and the United States.
It is thought that the surfacing of this new found capitalism will cause China to undergo westernisation and trigger her to replicate the Western political system, of which the recently formed members of the Chinese bourgeoisie will have significant influence.
Nonetheless, a number of elements point towards the occurrence of a completely different scenario which witnesses the strengthening of the Chinese State within the Chinese economy.
The author explores several possible scenarios with a view to demonstrating that the most plausible outcome is that of the current party system. The biggest challenge for the CCP will be however to show its ability to be dynamic when considering the demands of the Chinese people in a period of rapid and sustained growth.
The Madariaga-College of Europe Foundation has invited Mrs Marie-Claire BERGERE to talk about her book Chine, Le nouveau capitalisme d’Etat in which she argues that reforms launched over the past three decades do not have as a major objective to create a capitalist system but which on the contrary have the goal to uphold the current Chinese political system through the profiting of market resources.
a Lunch Debate with Mrs Marie-Claire BERGERE, Author of Chine, le nouveau capitalisme d’Etat; Emeritus Professor of INALCO and Former Research Director at EHESS.
The debate will be moderated by Mr Pierre DEFRAIGNE, Executive Director, Madariaga-College of Europe Foundation.
