The social inequalities and financial excesses of market capitalism – as testified by the ongoing financial and economic crisis, critical situation in the eurozone in terms of governance and the economy, public finances constrained by high debt levels, alarming and unprecedented unemployment rates and rise in protectionist tendencies – implore us to question the current Western economic model. Is the ‘re-foundation’ of  market capitalism necessary and feasible? What would be the priorities and content of such an action? Is Europe able and ready to meet this challenge? In particular, is there a way to ensure positive social and political dynamics across the eurozone to bring about a new model of market capitalism?

Citizen’s Controversy with Mrs Nicole DEWANDRE, Adviser for Societal Issues, DG CNECT, European Commission, and Professor Bruno COLMANT, Vlerick Management School and Université catholique de Louvain (UCL).
