The mounting discontent demonstrated by the rise of M5S in the Italian election is not necessarily directed against the path of European integration. However, it signals that the mainstream political elite and their commitment to the integrity of the Eurozone are discredited and incapable of giving citizens a sense of purpose other than the rescue of the single currency for its own sake. Will national political elites in Europe be able to get out of the deadlock of citizen disapproval, or will they have to compete with populism from the party politics of the 90s to the concept of "liquid democracy"? Is the resistance of national democracies to the development in European economic governance endangering the integrity of the Eurozone?

A Citizen's Controverversy with Mr Roberto GUALTIERI, Member of the European Parliament (S&D) and Mr Andrea BONANNI, Brussels Correspondent for La Repubblica.
