As guerrilla operations revamp in minerals-rich North-East Congo, the EU faces mounting pressure to draft binding legislation on corporate disclosure in supply chains. Unlike the US, which has finalised new tight rules on this subject, European firms are not required to provide details on their payments for mineral contracts, raising speculation about trade between companies and armed groups. Should the EU adopt binding disclosure requirements following the American model? Would such legislation be likely to penalise EU businesses vis-à-vis emerging economies in the race for African raw materials?
