On 22-23 April 2011, the InBev-Baillet Latour Chair of European Union-China Relations at the College of Europe in Bruges organised an international conference on “The EU, the US and China: Towards the New International Order?”, which was attended by over 80 participants, journalists and interested guests. 27 academic papers were presented across 7 different panels covering a wide array of diverse themes and topics.

The initial aim of this conference was to focus on the latest changes in the world and examine how important the interactions between the EU, the US and China are to the future of global governance. This conference therefore addressed this vital issue and invited participants to exchange their research results through a multidisciplinary perspective, providing holistic analysis from the fields of international relations, economic studies, security, law and culture. The conference also brought together the European, American and Chinese perspectives on these issues in order to foster greater exchanges of objective analysis on these developments at hand.

In order to provide a long-term and wide spread impact, the conference organisers disseminated the research results presented in this conference through a special issue of the EU-China Observer. Hence, the conference paper abstracts and a report on the conference are available in the April 2011 issue of the EU-China Observer (Issue 2, 2011).

In effect, Chinese Ambassador to the EU, H.E. Mr Song Zhe, and the newly appointed EEAS Managing Director for Asia, H.E. Mr Viorel Isticioaia Budura, graced the conference by their contribution to the event, through their keynote speeches and their active participation.

The conference was indeed attended by about 12 Chinese journalists, working for different news agencies who widely coveted the conference and even interviewed different participants. Their reports were made available both in Europe and in China.
