Workshop on the “Strategic and Structural Diplomacy of the EU”

The TOTAL Chair of EU Foreign Policy was one of the co-organizers of the international workshop on "Conceptualizing and Analyzing Strategic and Structural Diplomacy" organized in the framework of the Jean Monnet Multilateral Research Group on "The Diplomatic System of the European Union" (DSEU) (with the Universities of Loughborough, Maastricht and Leuven). The workshop, which took place at the University of Leuven on 7 and 8 April, was attended by around 100 scholars, practitioners and students.

On 7 April the session focussed on "New Development in the Analysis and Practice of Diplomacy: Lessons for the EU", with a keynote speech on "Supranational and Transnational Diplomacy" by Christer JÖNSSON (Lund University) and a panel debate with Christer JÖNSSON, Brian HOCKING (Loughborough University), Jan WOUTERS (K.U. Leuven) and Stephan KEUKELEIRE (College of Europe and K.U. Leuven).

On 8 April, during the first workshop, Michael SMITH and David ALLEN from Loughborough University presented their research on "Strategic Diplomacy", including EU-India and EU-China as case studies. During the second workshop Stephan KEUKELEIRE, Arnout JUSTAERT, Arben KALAJA and Artan COLLAKU presented their research on "Structural Diplomacy" and the challenge of ownership and alignment, with the EU's policies towards Kosovo and DRCongo as case studies.
