AYDIN Mustafa - Turkey in Europe: Identity, Politics, Security (8h)

This seminar explores Turkey’s transformation from an empire to a nation state in the first half of the 20th century, from one-party system to a managed-democracy and back to an authoritarian regime since 1950s, from an inward-looking peripheral economy to an open and competitive market since 1980s, and from an isolated middle power to an ambitious and regionally influential country since the end of the Cold War. As it seems to be caught in an endless cycle of transformation, Turkey’s socio-political developments, economic travails, and security concerns need to be constantly monitored and analyzed. The seminar will increase your familiarity with the history of Turkey and contribute to your understanding of its socio-political and ideational evolvement as well as its foreign and security policies. By examining the issues at hand, you will be able to identify the underlying structures and agents of change in Turkey as well as its extensive transformation. // ECTS Card
