On Thursday 15 December 2016, Dr Johannes REMY, Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the European Civilization Chair at the Natolin campus of the College of Europe, presented the main findings of his substantial new monograph, Brothers or Enemies: The Ukrainian National Movement and Russia from the 1840s to the 1870s, published by University of Toronto Press. More information on the book is available here.

The book was completed during Dr REMY’s time at Natolin. Drawing on a wealth of sources Dr REMY demonstrates in this book that the Ukrainian national idea and cause was very much more than a figment of the late nineteenth-century imagination and that it took shape half a century earlier than is often acknowledged. In his presentation to staff and students he emphasized the variety of positions taken both by Ukrainian national activists and by persons belonging to the Russian imperial governing elite. He also drew attention to the entanglement of the "Ukrainian question" with the "Polish question" in the nineteenth-century Russian Empire.

The meeting was chaired by the Chairholder, Professor Richard BUTTERWICK-PAWLIKOWSKI, who concluded the event by congratulating Dr REMY on his scholarly achievement and thanking him for his wide-ranging contribution to the College community at Natolin at the end of his work as postdoctoral fellow in the Chair.
