On 27 January 2020, the Friends of the Balkans Society held its very first panel discussion on "The Current State of EU Enlargement as seen from Albania and North Macedonia" at the College of Europe in Natolin.

The subjects for discussion included how Albania, North Macedonia and the EU perceive each other, the role of civil society, reconciliation, the rule-of-law and the current debate on how EU enlargement should be continued. On this occasion, we had the pleasure to host four experts:

  • Mr Ilir ALIAJ, Executive Director of CDDI and also Member of the Board of Directors and founder of European Movement Albania, Tirana;
  • Mr Francois LAFOND, Adviser to the Deputy Prime Minister for European Affairs in the Republic of North Macedonia, Skopje;
  • Mr Clive RUMBOLD, Deputy Head of the Western Balkans Division at the EEAS, Brussels;
  • Ms Marta SZPALA (Moderator), Senior Fellow at Ośrodek Studiów Wschodnich (Centre for Eastern Studies), Warsaw.
