In the framework of the Master of Arts in Transatlantic Affairs (MATA), offered jointly with The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, the College of Europe organised its first High-Level Lecture on Transatlantic Affairs on 22 March 2018.

The lecture was delivered by Dr Hans BINNENDIJK, who is a renowned US expert of transatlantic relations and currently a Senior Fellow at the Center for Transatlantic Relations at the Johns Hopkins University Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He is former Vice President for Research of the National Defense University and Theodore Roosevelt Chair in National Security Policy.

Introduced by Prof. Dr Dr Jörg MONAR, Rector of the College of Europe, Dr BINNENDIJK addressed the topic: "The Future of Transatlantic Relations". Following a brief historical review of what constitutes the core of transatlantic relations and the international liberal order, Dr BINNENDIJK provided an overview of the main current challenges and opportunities facing the transatlantic community in order to explore three possible scenarios for the future of the U.S.-EU relationship.

The lecture was followed by a Q&A session and a reception.

The College of Europe would like to thank the United States Mission to the European Union for their support.

In the College of Europe Policy Brief (CEPOB) #07.18, based on the outcome of the conference and entitled "Between continuity and erosion: Three scenarios for the future of transatlantic relations", Dr BINNENDIJK identifies four phases in the history of transatlantic relations and proposes three scenarios for future EU-US relations.
