The College of Europe Development Office organized a panel debate event on EU Big Data Regulation’.
The event took place on 12 December 2016 at the Committee of the Regions in Brussels.

The main topics were:

  • The transformative power of new technologies where big data is progressively gaining a key role;
  • Big data challenges and opportunities;
  • EU data protection rules.

The Rector of the College of Europe, Prof. Dr. Dr. Jörg Monar, welcomed the participants explaining the relevance of the subject in this period. Mr Wojciech Wiewiorowski, Assistant Supervisor at the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), delivered the key-note speech on the added value and risks of the management of big data. Prof. Lokke Moerel, professor of ICT law, delivered a speech on the fundamental need to build trust towards the citizens on the topic. Mr Jeremy Rollison, Director of Government Affairs EU Institutions Corporate and External and Legal Affairs at Microsoft Europe, expressed the importance of the predictive power of big data and invited participants to reflect upon the way that big data should be processed. Finally, Mr Jens-Henrik Jeppesen, Director of European Affairs at the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT), closed the panel debate.

This debate was of great relevance due to the newly adopted Directive and Regulation by the European Parliament and Council on the processing and free movement of personal data, as well as the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data by competent authorities. It also gave the opportunity to debate over the requirements and strategies to make big data a transformative power. Processing the data and the territorial scope of big data were the main topics raised during the questions & answers time. The debate was kindly moderated by Mrs Angela O’Neill, Director of Communications and Languages of the College of Europe.

For those who want to expand their knowledge on the topic, the College of Europe offers in summer an advanced course on EU Competition Law and IT Markets.
