The European Civilization Chair has adapted to the new circumstances created by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Chairholder, Professor Richard BUTTERWICK-PAWLIKOWSKI has completed his courses in online mode, and similarly contributed to the virtual study trip to the Baltic region. He and Professor Georges MINK are supporting students interested in European history and civilization by holding online meetings, at which students can present their thoughts and receive feedback, whether on historical epidemics or parts of their Master's theses. Two workshops have also been held in this way, led by Max Weber postdoctoral fellows from the European University Institute in Florence: Dr Anca CRETU and Dr Julie DESCHEPPER.
On 22 April 2020, the Chair – in conjunction with the Natolin Library – held its scheduled event in the 'Meet the Authors' series online. The Chairholder interviewed Dr Roger MOORHOUSE, one of the College's visiting professors, about his latest book, First to Fight: The Polish War 1939 (London: Bodley Head, 2019).
Furthermore, individual and collective research also continue, despite the current closure of archives and public libraries. The Chairholder works on the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, while the final volume of the 3R Three Ukrainian Revolutions project is being edited under the direction of the Chair's postdoctoral research fellow, Professor Paweł KOWAL.
Finally, Professor Richard BUTTERWICK-PAWLIKOWSKI recently published the article titled ‘Między polityką kulturową a kulturą polityczną – zagadka regalizmu w czasach Stanisława Augusta’, [Between the politics of culture and political culture: the riddle of royalism in the times of Stanisław August], in Piotr UGNIEWSKI (ed.), „Skłócony naród, król niepewny, szlachta dzika”?
