Marc Maresceau studied at the Faculty of Laws of Ghent University, The Johns Hopkins University (Bologna), the Institut de hautes études internationales (Geneva); he was Leverhulme Fellow at the University of Edinburgh.

He has held Visiting Chairs at many universities, including King's College (University of London); Università di Bologna; University of Georgia, Athens; China University of Political Science and Law, Beijing; Université Montesquieu Bordeaux IV; Università di Pisa (Scuola Sant' Anna); Université de Rennes I; The Hebrew University of Jerusalem; Libera Università Mediterranea; Université Paris II (Panthéon-Assas); Université de Nice.

His main field of research is EU external relations often concentrating on EU bilateral relations. He was consultant/academic expert for various projects of the European Commission in non-EU countries.

With Publisher Brill-Martinus Nijhoff, Leiden-Boston, he has founded a peer reviewed academic series Studies in EU External Relations and is general editor of the series.

He was President of ECSA-World (ESCA = European Community Studies Association) and ECSA-Europe (1999-2002).
