The European Economic Studies Department hosted a Lectio Magistralis by Pier Carlo PADOAN, Minister of Economy and Finance of Italy.

On 10 March 2015, Minister PADOAN visited the College of Europe after the ECFIN Council meeting in Brussels. 

Given the current economic situation in Europe, Minister PADOAN reviewed developments in the economic governance of the EU and offered insights on prospects for the European Monetary and Fiscal Union.

Minister Pier Carlo PADOAN

 

Mr Pier Carlo PADOAN was appointed Minister of Economy and Finance in the Government led by Matteo RENZI on February 2014. 

Minister PADOAN's strong links with the College of Europe go back many years. From 1998 to 2001, he served as Director of Studies of the European Economic Studies Department and remained a visiting professor until his appointment to the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

From 2001 to 2005, Minister PADOAN was the Italian Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund and as part of his mandate he oversaw European Coordination within the institution.

He served as Economic Adviser for Prime Ministers Massimo D’ALEMA and Giuliano AMATO and was responsible for coordinating the Italian position in the Agenda 2000 negotiations for the EU budget, Lisbon Agenda, European Council, bilateral meetings, and G8 Summits.

In June 2007, Mr Pier Carlo PADOAN was appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the OECD. While retaining his role as Deputy Secretary-General, in December 2009, he was also appointed Chief Economist and led the Economics Department of the OECD.

Besides his appointments at the College of Europe, Mr PADOAN was Professor of Economics at the University La Sapienza of Rome and held academic positions in several other universities in Japan, Argentina, Italy, Poland and Belgium. Moreover, he was Director of the Fondazione Italianieuropei, a policy think-tank focusing on economic and social issues.

He also served as consultant to the World Bank, European Commission and European Central Bank, where he called for aggressive easing and expressed concerns on employing budget cutbacks in the Eurozone's weakest economies.
