Study trip to "Flanders Fields"

On Wednesday 18 September, 340 students from the College of Europe (Bruges campus) representing 51 different nationalities undertook a study trip to “Flanders Fields” in the Ypres region where they visited Tyne Cot cemetery, Hill 60 battlefield and the Bayernwald trench reconstruction. They also attended the last post ceremony at the Menin Gate. A wreath was placed by students representing both sides of the conflicting armies of the first World War and one of the students pronounced the exhortation.

The students were welcomed at the Menin Gate by the former Governor of West-Flanders Mr Paul BREYNE who is now Commissioner General for the Coordination of the Commemoration World War I.

Newly appointed Rector Jörg MONAR wants the students to better understand the bloody conflicts which wiped out a generation of young people of their age, many of which took place in this region, with the hope that they will then better understand the peace and prosperity which is now possible through working together at a European and International level.
