Europe 2020: Adapting to a Changing World

Globalisation, the process of enlargement and societal change imply significant challenges for the European Union. The EU needs to adapt its structure and institutions in an environment marked by increasing global competition. This includes the reforms necessary for enlargement as well as an adaptation of the "European societal model", elements that are essential to the functionability and legitimacy of the EU. The changes in the world of labour and in society as a whole, brought about by the revolution in information technologies, at the same time offer a chance to re-establish Europe's social identity.
