A Youth Conference at the College of Europe, in cooperation with EuropaNova, the Bertelsmann Stiftung and Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV)

The European project stands at a crossroads. The outbreak of the financial and economic crises revealed the political and economic challenges which the European Union must face. An ambitious conference aims to provide the necessary impetus for European reform.

Shaping the Future: Harvard, Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV) and the College of Europe

After the initiation of a debate about Europe’s future at Harvard University’s European Conference in March 2013, the College of Europe decided to drive forward these discussions by organizing an ambitious annual high level conference. This project, initiated in 2013, builds on an impressive network of universities, think tanks, foundations, and sponsors. Among our prestigious partners are the Bertelsmann Stiftung, EuropaNova and Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV).

Bringing together politicians, academics and young leaders, two conferences entitled “Re-Inventing Europe – Conférence Europa” are being organized to provide a platform for this debate. Various stakeholders will have the opportunity to discuss the outcome of the European elections and what could be a sustainable solution to Europe’s current problems. The first conference, which took place in Bruges on 04 October 2014, aimed to provide input for the second conference at the Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV) university which is expected to be held in spring 2015.

Programme

How to best fight Youth Unemployment? What are the consequences of the European elections? Which role should Europe play in the world today?

This is just some of the important questions our panellists addressed. Speakers included, among others, Anthony GIDDENS, Elsa FORNERO, Oda Helen SLETNES, and many more! The opening keynote speech was delivered by Mr Herman VAN ROMPUY, President of the European Council. Six panel debates provided the participants with a choice.

Involving the young generation

A debate on the future of the continent cannot be conducted fruitfully without the input of the young generation. Drawing upon the College of Europe’s history as a lively and ambitious graduate institute nurturing Europe’s future, we call our project a Youth Conference and invite the young generation to develop their vision for the future of Europe. The topics chosen for the keynote speeches and panels reflect the conference’s future-oriented perspective. Panels incorporated young leaders and students were invited to participate via Twitter and by sending in their essays about the European project.
