Xosé M. NúñEZ SEIXAS

Xosé M. Núñez Seixas (Ourense, Galicia, 1966) studied at the universities of Santiago de Compostela and Dijon, and obtained his Ph. D. at the European University Institute in Florence (1992). He is currently Full Professor of Modern History at the University of Santiago de Compostela (on leave), and since October 2012 also Full Professor of Modern European History at the Ludwig-Maximilian University, Munich. He has been Visiting Scholar at the Universities of Bielefeld, Freiburg, Paris X, Paris VII, Zentrum für zeithistorische Forschung Postdam, Rennes, City University of New York and Stanford University. His work focuses on comparative history of nationalist movements and national and regional identities in Europe and Spain, as well as on the analysis of overseas migration from Spain to Latin America, and the study of modern war and war experiences in the twentieth century.

His most recent books are Movimientos nacionalistas en Europa. Siglo XX (1998, 2nd ed. 2004); ¡Fuera el invasor! Nacionalismo y movilización bélica en la guerra civil española 1936–1939 (Madrid, 2006); with F. Sevillano (ed.), Los enemigos de España. Imagen del otro, conflictos bélicos y disputas nacionales (siglos XVI-XX) (Madrid, 2010); Patriotas y demócratas. El discurso nacionalista español después de Franco (Madrid, 2010); with J. Moreno (ed.), Ser españoles. Imaginarios nacionalistas en el siglo XX (Barcelona, 2013); Icônes littéraires et stéréotypes sociaux: L’image des immigrants galiciens en Argentine (1800-1960) (Besançon, 2013), and Las patrias ausentes. Estudios sobre historia y memoria de las migraciones ibéricas (Oviedo, 2014). Currently, he is working on the history and memory of the Spanish Blue Division at the Eastern Front (1941-44), and he is also writinga comparative monograph on Regionalism, local identity and Dictatorship in Hitler’s Germany and Franco’s Spain.
