The College of Europe Development Office organized a workshop on “How to move up the technological ladder: knowledge, innovation and institutions in European regions” at this year’s Open Days - 13th European Week of Regions and Cities, taking place from 12-15 October 2015.

The OPEN DAYS – European Week of Regions and Cities is an annual four-day event taking place since 2003 during which cities and regions showcase their capacity to create growth and jobs, implement European Union cohesion policy, and prove the importance of the local and regional level for good European governance.

The event welcomes some 6 000 participants each year (local, regional, national and European decision makers and experts) for more than 100 workshops and debates, exhibitions and networking opportunities.

In the framework of the Open Days University, the College of Europe’s workshop took place on 13 October 2015 from 11:15-13:00 in the European Commission, Charlemagne Building. Over 100 professionals attended the workshop where Professor Andrés RODRÍGUEZ-POSE (College of Europe Visiting Professor), Mr Peter BERKOWITZ (DG Regio) and Mr Nicola CORTINOVIS (PhD candidate in the University of Utrecht and alumnus of the College of Europe) were the speakers. They discussed how to increase research and innovation in the peripheries and the challenges they face (structural, governmental or financial).

The workshop was moderated by Ms Rebecca CHRISTIE (Bloomberg).
