The Department of European Political and Adminstrative Studies organized a conference of the European Energy Policy Chair on "The Energy Union in its Neighbourhood: A Geostrategic Vision and a Sustainable Growth Agenda".

The European Union is now building an Energy Union. As a catalyst for its energy transition, it aims at ensuring secure, affordable and low-carbon energy for citizens and businesses all across Europe in a spirit of solidarity.

At the same time, the European Neighborhood Policy has been put to the test by geopolitics, both in the Southern and in the Eastern regions. The crisis in Ukraine along with the conflicts in Iraq and Syria, pose formidable challenges. To meet the objectives of producing secure, affordable and climate-friendly energy, the EU needs to renew its global energy diplomacy, embedded in a broader dimension of energy security.

The Energy Union can also become a key driver for economic development in the European Union by acting as a unique opportunity to trigger higher economic turnout while creating and securing employment in the Energy sector. Deepened bilateral and multilateral cooperation with the European Neighborhood partner countries can significantly increase the EU’s competitiveness on the international scene and support the EU’s economic strategy.
