His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch BARTHOLOMEW gave a speech entitled "The Role of Churches in Today's Europe" on Monday 11 November 2019 at the College of Europe, Bruges campus.

It was a great honour for the College of Europe to welcome the 270th successor of Andrew the Apostel, His All-Holiness BARTHOLOMEW I, Ecumenical Patriarch.

The Ecumenical Throne of Constantinople is the first ecclesiastical seat of the Orthodox Church. It can be traced back to Saint Andrew, the first-called of the Apostles. The title ‘Ecumenical Patriarch’ was granted to the Patriarch of Constantinople by the IVth Ecumenical Council in the Vth century. Beyond the borders, the Ecumenical Patriarch is currently the spiritual leader of more than three hundred million Orthodox Christians around the world.

14h00 : introduction of the Ecumenical Patriarch BARTHOLOMEW by Mr Herman VAN ROMPUY, President of the Administrative Council of the College of Europe;

14h10 : speech by His All-Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch BARTHOLOMEW;

14h45 : conclusions by Mr Margaritis SCHINAS, Deputy Director-General, DG COMM, European Commission; and former student of the College of Europe (1985-1986).

14h55 : Comments by Mr Joseph HERZOG, student of the Hannah Arendt Promotion 2019-2020, College of Europe.

15h05 : Private meeting with selected College of Europe students.
