On 18 October 2016, the European General Studies Programme at the College of Europe organized a lecture “Promoting European identity through culture? The EU’s representations of heritage” given by Dr Oriane CALLIGARO, Researcher on the project "Governing Values, Governing through Values, Governed by Values", at the Université Libre de Bruxelles.

Dr Oriane CALLIGARO addressed a topic relevant to all the EG courses: the EU’s efforts to promote conceptions of European identity, culture and heritage. As the traditional narrative of EU integration is increasingly challenged since the turn of the century, EU institutions have called upon intellectuals and artists to emphasize common cultural traits as a new narrative for the next decades of European integration. Dr CALLIGARO discussed how the promotion of European cultural heritage has become a central element of EU cultural policy and an important element of defining Europeanness at the EU level. Combining historical research and political science assessment, Dr CALLIGARO challenged conceptions associating EU involvement in the cultural field with laudatory cultural justifications for EU integration and show that the definition of Europeanness was an incremental and negotiated process involving several institutional and non-institutional actors.

This event was open to all students.
