On 27 January 2020, students of the joint College of Europe-Fletcher School Master of Arts in Transatlantic Affairs (MATA) and other study programmes of the College of Europe had the opportunity to discuss with high-level representatives of the European External Action Service’s ‘United States and Canada’ Division on “Building Narratives for a Sustainable Transatlantic Future”. The event was organised in Bruges, and several MATA students participated via video connections from the US. The main aim of the event was to have an open exchange about future transatlantic narratives which could help reinvigorate the relationship between the United States and the European Union. Students were among others asked to think about what still unites these two global actors and why their relationship remains important in today’s rapidly changing world. Participants also reflected on the continued relevance of shared values, misconceptions about each other and key future areas of cooperation in EU-US relations.
