The Hellenic Society is honoured to host this Tuesday 6 April at 16:00 the Vice-President of the European Commission for Promoting our European Way of Life, Mr Margaritis SCHINAS, for an online (Webex) conversation on the subject: “European Way of Life: A Europe that protects, a Europe that empowers”.
Rector Federica MOGHERINI opens the event, making a short introduction.
Mr SCHINAS is an alumnus of the College of Europe (1986, Bruges campus) holding a Diploma of Advanced European Studies (D.A.E.S) in European Public Administration. He also holds an LLB from the Law School of the University of Thessaloniki (1985) and an M.Sc. in Public Administration and Policy from the London School of Economics and Political Science (1987). His career in EU affairs and particularly at the Commission has been long: he has been inter alia Deputy Head of Cabinet to Vice-President of the European Commission Loyola de Palacio, responsible for Transport, Energy and Relations with the European Parliament (1999-2004), Head of Cabinet to Commissioner Markos Kyprianou, responsible for Health and Consumer Protection (2004-2007), Member of the European Parliament (2007-2009), Chief Spokesperson of the Commission (2014-2019) and Deputy Director-General at the Directorate-General “Communication” (DG COMM) (2015-present).
He has been serving his current mandate as Vice-President of the Commission for Promoting our European Way of Life since 2019. His portfolio entails a wide range of responsibilities, such as coordinating the Commission’s work on a New Pact on Migration and Asylum, the development of a European Security Union, making education more accessible and inclusive, building a genuine Union of equality and diversity, and maximising the potential of culture and sport.
