On 18 February 2019, the European Parliament and the Council reached a provisional agreement on the Commission's proposal to strengthen coordination between immigration liaison officers deployed to non-EU countries. The new legislation forms part of the EU's efforts to reduce irregular migration and provide for orderly and legal migration pathways. The Parliament and the Council also agreed on the proposal for an EU visa policy, facilitating tourism, trade, and business, whilst strengthening security. Meanwhile, at the Member States level, French President Macron’s manifesto ‘For a European Renaissance’ has been calling for reinforced EU border security, echoed by German CDU leader Annegret KRAMP-KARRENBAUER’s call for an operational border police force to support national efforts.

The College of Europe is following very closely the latest political developments on migration, asylum and border management in Europe. In the framework of the Hellenic National Week at the College of Europe, Ms Sofia ASTERIADI, Commissioner AVRAMOPOULOS’ Deputy Head of Cabinet, delivered a speech on "Responding to Migration and Security Challenges" to the students in Bruges.

This year, the College of Europe Development Office will organise the fourth edition of its executive training course on Managing Migration in Europe. The course, taking place in Bruges between 23 and 25 September 2019, will discuss and review instruments, best practices, and tools related to the current European migration and asylum policy. Registration for the course is now open and an early bird discount is available until 31 July 2019.
