The Future of the Green Deal – Conference of the European Energy and Climate Chair

The 2024 annual conference of the IBERDROLA Manuel Marín Chair for European Energy and Climate Policy focused on “The future of EU climate and energy policies”. It took place in a hybrid format at the College of Europe in Bruges on16 April 2024. The conference was opened by Rector Federica MOGHERINI and chaired by Professor Dirk BUSCHLE. The keynote speech by Dr Fatih BIROL, International Energy Agency Executive Director, calling on the next European Commission to launch a large-scale industrial master plan, was covered widely in European media.

The first panel on “Undoing the Green Deal?” with Kurt VANDENBERGHE (Director General DG CLIMA), Sandrine DIXSON-DECLEVE (Co-President of the Club of Rome) and Tibor STELBACZKY (Principal Adviser Energy Diplomacy at the EEAS) reflected on the achievements and open challenges ahead of European elections. The second panel with Leigh HANCHER (Professor at University of Tilburg), Simon SCHUNZ (Professor at the College of Europe), Sophie DONNELLY (Policy Officer at the Commission), Leonardo MEEUS (Director of the Florence School of Regulation), and Ann METTLER (Vice President Europe, Breakthrough Energy) discussed the appraisal by the College of Europe’s Reflection Group on the Green Deal, which was launched in 2023. It focused on the governance, just transition and external dimensions of the European energy and climate policies. The panels were moderated by Anna GUMBAU and Lucie COATLEVEN. Student representatives of the Energy Group of the College of Europe delivered the conference’s closing remarks.
