Conference of the Energy and Climate Chair: "The end of a romantic beginning? The Green Deal exposed to crisis"

On Tuesday 21 June 2022 (16h00-18h25 CET), the IBERDROLA Manuel Marín Chair for European Energy and Climate Policy organised a conference entitled "The end of a romantic beginning? The Green Deal exposed to crisis".

The crisis in Ukraine has put the European Green Deal - and in a larger sense the EU's energy and climate policies - through one of its biggest tests. While overhauling its climate legislation with the 'Fit for 55' package and dealing with the aftermath of the COVID-pandemic, the EU faces urgent questions of security of supply and inflation of energy prices. Geopolitics is back with a bite. The EU has responded with the REPowerEU announcements, which try to strike a balance between diversification of the EU's fossil fuel supply while promoting renewables as the way to increase energy independence. The choices made in this crisis will likely prove themselves to be of historical importance.
