China's 19th Party Congress held in Beijing in October attracted global attention, not only because it is important for Chinese domestic policymaking, but also because it will have a strong impact on international relations in the coming decades. At this Congress, the Chinese Communist Party sets its national policy goals and elects its top leadership. In particular, the Belt and Road Initiative is written into the Party Constitution. The Belt and Road Initiative was put forward by the Chinese leadership at the end of 2013. The network starts from China and ends in the EU, and will involve a large number of countries along the land and maritime routes. The successful implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative will need multilateral cooperation, based on mutual beneficial principles and equal partnership. The influence of the 19th Party Congress on EU-China relations will gradually play out over the coming months and years. The EU is concerned about China’s rise and its impact on global governance. How China and the EU will cooperate with each other to facilitate their respective interests and values remains to be seen.

The Baillet Latour Chair of EU-China Relations and the EU-China Research Centre, Department of EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies, organises a seminar on 20 November 2017 to debate about China’s domestic and foreign policy and its impact on EU-China relations.

The speakers for the seminar are:

  • Professor XU Jie, Beijing Youth Politics College;
  • Mr Pierre DEFRAIGNE, College of Europe;
  • Dr Duncan FREEMAN, College of Europe.

The seminar will be chaired by Professor Jing MEN.

The seminar is open for the public but registration is required before 20 November 2017 at 9:00.
