On 17 September 2020, Prof. Krzysztof CZYŻEWSKI gave a special lecture at the College of Europe in Natolin entitled:

"Borderland: The Concept in Practice"

The study of borders and borderlands has attracted renewed interests, which generated growing debates about theoretical and conceptual implications across different regions in the world. But what does the concept of "borderland" mean in practice? Krzysztof CZYŻEWSKI, a "practitioner" of borderlands in Poland’s north-east, introduced the topic, highlighting those aspects that characterize borderlands in practice and serve as sources of community.

The lecture was part of a preparatory lecture series for the students of the Mário Soares Promotion participating in the first semester study trips, taking place from 20 to 26 September 2020.

About the speaker:

Prof. Krzysztof CZYŻEWSKI is a Polish author and initiator of the Borderland Foundation in Sejny, Poland. The foundation is a cultural institution co-founded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the Podlaskie Province Regional Assembly Government. The Centre is located in a former "shetl" on the Polish-Lithuanian-Belarusian borderland. In 2011, together with the Borderland team, Prof. CZYŻEWSKI also opened the International Dialogue Center in Krasnogruda. He is the initiator of programmes of intercultural dialogue in Central Europe, the Balkans, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Indonesia, Bhutan, North Africa and other borderlands of the world.
