The LAW Department organizes an honorary lecture in honour of Professor Jacques BOURGEOIS on Friday 17 February, from 18:30 to 19:15 in Auditorium 1The EU’s trade policy and its other policies – a duty of consistency ? by Professor Jacques BOURGEOIS and Professor Isabelle VAN DAMME.

Jacques BOURGEOIS has taught the seminar “The Law of the EU Trade Policy/ Capita Selecta of EU Trade Law” for 39 years in the European Legal Studies Department (1982-2021) and in EG in 1975-76.

His bio speaks for itself: ‘Jacques Bourgeois is a recognized authority on European Union (EU) law, with over four decades of experience in private practice and public service. He currently advises Sidley lawyers and clients around the globe on all aspects of EU law, with a specific focus on trade and competition matters. Prior to entering private practice, Jacques Bourgeois served for over 25 years as a senior official with the European Commission. From 1987 to 1991, he was the principal legal adviser of the Commission in charge of foreign trade policy and, later, antitrust policy. Previously, he served for several years as head of the Trade Policy Instruments Division in the Directorate-General for External Relations and was responsible for the implementation of the EU’s regulations on anti-dumping and subsidies, as well as for safeguard measures and protection against illicit commercial practices. He originally joined the Commission as a member of Legal Service in 1965 and was responsible for personnel issues, matters of institutional domain, agriculture and fisheries policy, and external relations.’

Drawing on his professional background in EU institutions and private practice, Jacques BOURGEOIS is also an outstanding academic who has consistently and systematically put his in-depth knowledge, practical insights and expertise at the service of academia and research. Throughout his career he was a professor at the College of Europe in Bruges as well as guest professor at Ghent University. He was nominated to the Jean Monnet Chair at the University of Bonn during the 1992–1993 academic year and was a visiting professor at the University of Michigan Law School in 1976. He organised several academic workshops and was often invited as a speaker at international conferences. He has authoritative publications to his name in the field of EU trade and EU competition law. He has also been very much involved in the College Community more generally.  Since 2004-05, he was the representative of the visiting professors in the Academic Council (Bruges). He is also an active member of the GCLC Executive Committee since its inception and took up the function of GCLC President in the period 2008-2010.  Jacques BOURGEOIS is a much appreciated and distinguished member of faculty of the European Legal Studies Department of the College of Europe in Bruges for well over 20 years. He has actively contributed to the functioning, reputation and visibility of the College of Europe in the legal profession and academia.
