Democracy is under pressure in Europe.
In recent years, we have witnessed how fundamental principles like rule of law and media freedom have gradually eroded in various European countries, including in EU member states. Since last summer, the string of dramatic events in Belarus and Russia has demonstrated even more clearly that the quest for a Europe governed by liberal democracy is not over.
25 March marks the Belarusian Freedom Day, celebrated yearly by the country’s pro-democratic opposition. As students of the College of Europe, we salute the courage and resilience of the Belarusian opposition movement. Despite continuous and brutal violence from the country’s authoritarian regime, the movement has consistently mobilised peaceful protests week after week since the rigged presidential election of August.
We stand with those who call for free and fair elections in Belarus. We call for an end to repression and for the freeing of political prisoners. We will celebrate 25 March alongside our Belarusian brothers and sisters.
The cause of democracy must be defended daily. Everywhere in Europe, we call for our fellow citizens to stand up for democracy with the steadfastness exemplified by the Belarusian opposition.
Democracy – and with it, our very way of life – is undermined when the judiciary is placed under partisan control; when the government systematically silences independent press; when a party harnesses the state machinery to advance its interests; when the fundamental rights of certain groups of people are put under question.
In these and other situations, silence and apathy are our enemies. A vigilant citizenry determined to assert its rights is the strongest guarantee for democratically governed nations within a democratic Europe.
As we prepare to commemorate 25 March, we remain mindful that the fortitude of the Belarusian democracy movement gives us much to learn from.

The campaign began under the name “Free Belarus Action”, until it was renamed as “Democracy Under Pressure” in 2014 to draw attention to the alarming developments observed in other European countries.
Дэмакратыя пад ціскам: заклік да дэмакратыі ў Беларусі і за яе межамі
Дэмакратыя знаходзіцца пад ціскам у Еўропе.
У апошнія гады мы сталі сведкамі таго, як асноўныя прынцыпы, такія як вяршэнства закона і свабода СМІ, паступова пагаршаюцца ў розных еўрапейскіх краінах, у тым ліку ў дзяржавах-членах Еўразвязу. З лета мінулага года шэраг драматычных падзей у Беларусі і Расіі яшчэ больш выразна прадэманстраваў, што пошукі Еўропы, у якой кіруе ліберальная дэмакратыя, не скончыліся.
25 сакавіка ў Беларусі адбываецца Дзень Волі, які штогод адзначае дэмакратычная апазіцыя краіны. Як студэнты Каледжа Еўропы, мы вітаем мужнасць і ўстойлівасць беларускага апазіцыйнага руху. Нягледзячы на бесперапынны і жорсткі гвалт з боку аўтарытарнага рэжыму краіны, рух паслядоўна мабілізаваў мірныя акцыі пратэсту тыдзень за тыднем пасля фальсіфікацыі прэзідэнцкіх выбараў у жніўні мінулага года.
Мы падтрымліваем тых, хто заклікае да свабодных і сумленных выбараў у Беларусі. Мы заклікаем спыніць рэпрэсіі і вызваліць палітвязняў. Мы будзем адзначаць 25 сакавіка разам з нашымі беларускімі братамі і сёстрамі.
Справу дэмакратыі трэба абараняць штодня. Паўсюдна ў Еўропе мы заклікаем нашых суграмадзян адстойваць дэмакратыю з непахіснасцю, якую дэманструе беларуская апазіцыя.
Дэмакратыя – а разам з ёй і наш лад жыцця – падрываецца, калі судовая ўлада знаходзіцца пад ідэалагічным кантролем, калі ўрад сістэматычна замоўчвае незалежную прэсу, калі адзін бок выкарыстоўвае дзяржаўны механізм для прасоўвання сваіх інтарэсаў, калі асноўныя правы пэўных груп людзей ставяцца пад пытанне.
У гэтых і іншых сітуацыях маўчанне і апатыя – нашы ворагі. Пільныя грамадзяне, поўныя рашучасці адстойваць свае правы, з'яўляюцца наймацнейшай гарантыяй для дэмакратычных краін у дэмакратычнай Еўропе.
Рыхтуючыся адзначыць 25 сакавіка, мы памятаем, што нам ёсць шмат чаму павучыцца ў моцнага духам беларускага дэмакратычнага руху.
Даведкавая інфармацыя: З 2006 г. Маладыя еўрапейскія федэралісты, МЕФ (Young European Federalists, JEF) ладзяць штогадовы тыдзень дзеянняў за дэмакратыю ў Еўропе. Кампанія пачыналася пад назвай «Дзеянне за свабодную Беларусь», пакуль у 2014 г. не была перайменавана як «Дэмакратыя пад ціскам», каб прыцягнуць увагу да трывожных падзей, якія назіраюцца ў іншых еўрапейскіх краінах.
