Online diplomatic training on the EU and event on multilateralism organised in collaboration with the EU Delegation to Chile

From 28 September to 2 October 2020, the College of Europe Development Office implemented the third edition of a diplomatic training course on the EU in collaboration with the EU Delegation to Chile and for the Andrés Bello Diplomatic Academy of the country. The training course was organised in the framework of the EU-funded project “EU Policy and Outreach Partnership in South America”.

Due to travel restrictions and health considerations, the course took place online for the first time. It was attended by 30 students, 15 from Chile and 15 from other countries in the region, part of the same study programme at the Diplomatic Academy. Through the course, they had the opportunity to learn more about the EU, the priorities of the von der Leyen Commission and specific policy areas such as foreign policy, climate and trade. The course ended with an online simulation game so that participants could better understand how decisions are made at EU level and practise their negotiation skills.

The one-week training course was closed with speeches by Ambassador León DE LA TORRE, EU Ambassador to Chile, Ambassador Miguel Ángel GONZÁLEZ, the Director of the Diplomatic Academy, and Ms Claire LAWRENCE, Deputy Director of the Development Office of the College of Europe.

Within the framework of the same project, the College of Europe organised an online high-level event, also jointly with the EU Delegation to Chile, on 13 October. It was entitled “El Desafío del Multilateralismo en las Respuestas Globales Post Pandemia” (The challenge of multilateralism in the global answers after the pandemic) and included speakers representing the EU, Chile and the United Nations (UN): León DE LA TORRE, EU Ambassador to Chile, Silvia RUCKS, UN coordinator in Chile, and Raúl FERNANDEZ DAZA, Deputy Secretary for External Relations of Chile.

The key-note speech was given by Professor Thomas MAYR-HARTING, a visiting professor at the College of Europe and former Ambassador and EU diplomat, and focused on “Revitalising the multilateral order: The role of the European Union”.

The event included interventions in both English and Spanish and thus had simultaneous translation throughout.
