Rector Mogherini was invited by the Senate and Council of the University of Surrey, and with the support of their Chancellor, His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent, to receive the Honorary Degree award of Doctor of the University (DUniv) honoris causa.

She was nominated in recognition of "her outstanding contribution to political and social impact as mediator, negotiator, broker, and promoter of peace and societal wellbeing".

A celebration reception took place following the ceremony, as well as a dinner hosted by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Max Lu.

During her visit to the University of Surrey, Rector Mogherini also took part in a roundtable event on European foreign policy, titled: "Europe's place in a Challenged World". The event was hosted by the Department of Politics and the Centre for Britain and Europe.
