The Competition Summer School for Asian officials, organised by the College of Europe, within the framework of the EU-Asia Competition Cooperation project, took place online for the second year this summer, from 20 June to 1 July 2022. This new online edition had a special focus on the recent review of EU competition policy and law, with digital transition and green economy being two of the main cross-cutting topics of this year’s edition.
The Rector of the College of Europe, Ms Federica Mogherini, welcomed the competition officials from ASEAN Member States, China, India and Korea during the event.
On 20 June, participants from all the partner countries joined for a virtual visit to the European Commission Directorate-General for Competition, where they were welcomed by Ms Linsey McCallum, Deputy Director-General for Antitrust at DG Competition. Mr Olivier Guersent, Director General of DG Competition, also addressed the participants during the Summer School.
The Competition Summer School is designed to combine lectures, workshops, analysis of cases and meetings with officials from the Commission’s DG Competition, officials from the National Competition Authorities, practitioners and leading academics. The lectures combine theory with practical experience in the form of recent cases and examples, which encourage problem solving, comparative analysis and live discussion.
Ms Inge Bernaerts, Director for Strategy and Policy in DG Competition, took part in an interview on the EC’s current comprehensive review of EU competition policy and law and its expected outcome. Speakers from Asian jurisdictions, such as India, Korea, Philippines and Malaysia, joined officials from DG Competition for a conversation around some of the key topics of competition law and policy, such as cartel detection, the role of judicial control in competition cases and the importance of embedding competition into wider public policy making to promote pro-competitive reforms.
